With the development of the common Edison light bulb about 100 years ago, the social and economic life has changed substantially. This change is now facing a new challenge, LED lighting technolgy will renew our current view on lighting drastically. 

LEDs or "Light emmiting diodes" are nothing more than electronic semiconductors. If a current is sent through a LED in the right direction, it will transmit light. By using different chips and substrates, it is possible to create monochromatic light - light of the same wavelength.

Already decades ago, LEDs have been used to transfer electrical signals into visual information. But this was still far away from being acknowledge as a revolution. The rapid developments in LED technology make them highly interesting for the lighting industry now. Increased efficiency (lm/w), better colour sorting (binning) and advanced thermal conditions even the way for LEDs into all different lighting markets. Every day we find a large number of new and unfound applications that jsut wait to be challenged - in all lighting areas.

During the time of Edison's bulb, people highly appreciated the different comfort of lighting in their daily lives. Light bulbs made it possible to use the night for all kinbd of activities - which made people pretty much independent from day and night. Today, the effect of lighting is even bigger, since we understood how lighting can do much more than just illuminating. Lighting became important for our visual perception of our environment. Light is a key to our emotions and wealth. Different colours of light stimulate our emotions in one or the other way. LEDs have great chances to support this need for quality lighting. Due to their dimensions and other physical aspects, they can be used perfectly for new lighting concepts and impressive projects.
